Campground Reports

Chronological campground reviews from our life on the road.

Greely (Ottawa) ON – Poplar Grove RV Campground
Our RV was delivered to this campground. We stayed here from 26 September until we left on 26 October. Poplar Grove is an older, but lovely, RV park about 45 minutes drive from downtown Ottawa. Many of the sites are not too closely spaced and are in lovely wooded areas. There are nice trails to walk, a pool and a tennis court. It closes for the winter on 31 October and reopens 1 May.

Weedsport NY – Day's Inn – 26 October
Because most campgrounds in New York close about 15 October we were not able to find a campground for the night. There is a large gravel parking area across the road from the Day's Inn, which might be usable as an overnight stop, but we took a room in the motel and just parked there.

Erie PA – Hill's Family Camp – 27 October
An older but nice campground located well off the highway, making it quiet. The wi-fi does not cover the whole camp. There is cable TV, a game room, store, and a good laundry. It closes at the end of October.

Delaware OH – Cross Creek Camp Resort – 28 October (2 nights)
A clean, up-scale RV resort with everything imaginable. It's well off the road and quiet. We would have stayed longer, but it was cold and windy.

Berea KY – Walnut Meadow RV Park – 30 October (2 nights)
An old campground, but still in decent shape. They have a meeting room where they hold weekly gospel concerts. We were lucky to catch the last performance of one of Americas foremost gospel song writers.

Kingston TN – Soaring Eagle RV Park – 1 November
This is RV hell, right at the side of a busy highway. Too bad, as the facilities were otherwise reasonably nice, with a river and lots of places to walk in the woods.

Benton TN – Black Bear Cove Resort – 2 November (1 week)
An upscale resort with a small associated campground alongside a major river. It is quiet and has a lovely restaurant.

Atlanta GA – Cummins Power South – 9 November (2 nights)
This is not a campground; we stopped here to have the RV serviced. They have four 50-amp electrical hook-ups for customer use. Very friendly staff.

Forsyth GA – LD RV Park – 11 November (1 week)
A small and quiet RV park that caters to local seasonal RVers. There is not much around it—nowhere to go for long walks.

Jennings FL – Jennings Outdoor Resort – 18 November (2 nights)
At the side of the Interstate and so a bit noisy, but otherwise a nice spot with lots of room to walk around.

Ocala FL - Ocala RV Camp Resort – 20 November (2 weeks)
A full-service campground. Nicely treed with live oaks and hanging Spanish moss. Some sites are close to the interstate, so pick a spot back in the trees. We took in a pot luck Thanksgiving dinner here.

Perry FL – Perry KOA – 4 December (3 nights)
Nicely appointed RV park with the friendliest staff we've encountered to date. Ample room to roam around. Free coffee and Belgian waffles on weekends!

Milton FL – Milton Gulf Pines KOA – 7 December
Very slow check-in process. It was noisy and the "continental breakfast" was just a few wrapped pastries and a coffee urn. No place to sit.

Saucier MS – Lakeview RV Resort – 8 December (1 week)
Fairly new park with nice concrete pads next to a lake. Quiet, but a bit austere until the trees grow in.

New Orleans LA – KOA West – 16 December (11 days)
Best feature is proximity to the French Quarter (half-hour ride). Free shuttle service. Quiet except for train whistles.

Westlake LA – Whispering Meadow RV Park
Nice park in a quiet location north of I-10. New concrete pads and a clubhouse; caters mostly to long-term residents.

San Antonio TX – Texas 281 RV Park – 28 December (1 week)
Good value in Bulverde, 30 mins north of downtown. Well treed and has a nice community spirit.

Fort Stockton TX – Ft. Stockton RV Park – 4 January (2 nights)
Quiet and has an on-site café with delicious home-cooked meals. We highly recommend the ribs!

El Paso TX – Mission RV Park – 6 January
Facilities are good (tennis, pool, repair), but it is right beside I-10 behind a truck yard. Very noisy.

Lordsburg NM – Lordsburg KOA – 7 January
Clean and friendly in a crummy neighbourhood. Unusually large lots. Mostly overnight transients here.

Phoenix AZ – Pioneer RV Resort – 8 January (10 days)
Age-55 community, exceptionally neat and clean. The transient pull-through area is a bit austere.

Brenda AZ – Desert Gold RV Resort – 18 January (4 weeks)
Huge (500+ sites). Every amenity including a post office. Most residents are seasonal.

Yuma AZ – Arizona Sands RV Park – 15 February (1 week)
Typical Arizona park with gravel and concrete slabs. Very complete welcome packet and lots of fellow Canadians.

Boulevard CA – Sacred Rocks RV Park – 22 February
Remote and rustic retreat in the mountains. Twist road to get in, but very quiet with great hiking trails.

San Diego CA – Mission Bay RV Resort – 23 February (1 week)
City-owned, modern, all paved. Sites are a bit close together, but right on Mission Bay.

Barstow CA – Shady Lane RV Camp – 13 March (2 nights)
Rough little park, unpaved and few services, but inexpensive and friendly. Cash only.

Needles CA – Desert View RV Resort – 15 March (3 nights)
Fully-featured, gravel streets and paved pads. They register you right at your site. Cash only.

Williams NM – Canyon Gateway RV Park – 18 March (3 nights)
Close to the Grand Canyon. Surfaced entirely in ground volcanic cinder!

Sun Valley – Root-66 RV Park – 21 March (2 nights)
Noisy and basic, but cheap ($14.50) and close to Petrified Forest Park.

Albuquerque NM – Enchanted Trails RV Park & Trading Post – 23 March (1 week)
Located on Route-66. Features restored Hudson cars and vintage trailers. Clubhouse but no organized activities.

Amarillo TX – Amarillo Ranch RV Park – 30 March (2 days)
Nice, quiet park with an indoor pool, Jacuzzi, and sauna.

Elk City OK – Elk Run RV Park – 1 April (2 nights)
Needs some TLC but quiet, shielded by a large truck stop.

Oklahoma City OK – Council Road RV Park – 3 April (11 nights)
Surprisingly quiet for being near a busy highway. Good facilities and nice staff.

Grove OK – Cedar Oaks RV Resort – 14 April (1 night)
Lovely full-service campground on the shore of Grand Lake. Very friendly people.

Richland MO – Gasconade Hills RV Campground – 15 April (1 night)
Beside the Gasconade River. Specialized in rafting. Narrow, twisty paved road to get in.

Effingham IL – Camp Lakewood – 16 April (1 night)
On the shore of Lake Pauline. Lovely wooded lots and well cared for.

Huntington IN – Timberlake – 17 April (1 night)
Remote and scenic, but a bit rustic. Some pads are not level.

Emmett MI – Emmett KOA – 18 April (1 night)
Really nice with wooded lots, a lake, and mini-putt golf.

Milton ON – Milton Heights – 19 April (1 night)
Older but well-cared for. Sites are tight due to trees. Good shopping nearby.

Kingston ON – Rideau Acres Camping Resort – 20 to 29 April
Huge and scenic with treed lots. Clubhouse available, but Wi-Fi was poor.

Ottawa ON – Recreationland Tent & Trailer Park – 30 April to date
Quiet with views of Gatineau Hills. Excellent Wi-Fi. Water can get a bit "punky" late in summer.

Mattawa ON – Sid Turcotte Park – 1 September (1 night)
Lovely park beside the Mattawa River. Very quiet and secluded.

Sault Ste. Marie – Wal*Mart – 2 September (1 night)
First Wal*Mart stay. Noisy due to being across from a busy truck stop.

Great stop along a river with many wooded trails.

Thunder Bay ON – Wal*Mart – 4 September (1 night)
No problems.

Kenora ON – Wal*Mart – 5 September (1 night)
Campgrounds were full. Despite "no overnight" signs, the local police were very accommodating when we called.

Winnipeg MB – Traveller's RV Resort – 6 September (8 days)
Best Winnipeg offers for big rigs, but lots of mosquitoes and no Wi-Fi.

Yorkton SK – 14 September (1 night)
